His literary works helped shape American literature and politics. Hughes, like others active in the Harlem Renaissance, had a strong sense of racial pride. Through his poetry, novels, plays, essays, and children’s books, he promoted equality, condemned racism and injustice, and celebrated African American culture, humor, and spirituality.” Click here to learn more about Langston Hughes.

“Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams, For when dreams go
Life is a barren field, Frozen with snow.”

– Langston Hughes
